The Opportunity

As a dedicated Director of Commercial Insurance Underwriting you will lead a high performing team of underwriters and will oversee the strategy, design and execution of all aspects of underwriting for USAA Small Business Insurance practice.

Manages a team of commercial insurance underwriting professionals in planning, developing, and administration of USAA Group Commercial Insurance products and programs which support operational performance objectives. Ensures products and programs maintain compliance with all legal requirements. May serve as a business process or program owner.

This position can work remotely in the continental U.S. with occasional business travel.

What you'll do:

  • Develop, lead, and hold others accountable for implementing underwriting strategy through their teams and monitor performance pursuant to underwriting guidelines and processes.

  • Direct the identification, analysis, development, and implementation of complex initiatives that maintain the relevance and integrity of our underwriting policies and programs while balancing operational efficiency, competitiveness, and regulatory compliance.

  • Ensure adherence to established policies and effective program support.

  • Direct resources to develop and maintain P&C contracts, forms, endorsements, and rates in accordance with Commercial Insurance & P&C strategies while maintaining compliance with laws and regulations.

  • Direct the maintenance of existing processing and automated reporting systems to comply with legal and company requirements.

  • Manage identification and implementation of opportunities to improve systems to increase member conductivity and operational efficiency.

  • Direct the oversight of underwriting supplier programs leveraging available products to improve risk management and operational efficiency.

  • Builds and oversees a team of employees for assigned functional area through ongoing execution of recruiting, development, retention, coaching and support, performance management, and managerial activities.

  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you have:

  • Bachelor’s degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.

  • 8 years in commercial insurance underwriting, or as a producer or agent of commercial insurance

  • 3 years of direct team lead or management experience.

  • Experience defining and implementing underwriting processes, procedures, and/or guidelines.

  • Experience researching, developing, writing, applying, & editing policy forms, notices, and procedures.

  • Advanced knowledge of relevant industry practices, trends, and regulatory requirements.

  • Experience in making data driven decisions to create actionable recommendations for performance improvement.

  • Experience in presenting analysis and findings to varying levels of management and business stakeholders to gain support for recommendations and influence initiatives.

  • Proven skills in developing strong relationships with peers and key business stakeholders by collaborating across and outside of an organization.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.

What sets you apart:

  • Experience in writing commercial lines underwriting guidelines, processes and procedures for new products

  • Experience in Agile methodologies and digital technology

  • US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $109,130.00 - $208,580.00.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
