New Product Development Director

ATS Scientific Products is searching for a New Product Development Director to join the team!

The NPD Director will be responsible for delivery of all aspects of new products development of the SP standard freeze drying, evaporation and thermal systems, from opportunity evaluation, through design, development and launch, with all the associated activities mandated by the SP new product development process including retirement of replaced products. Focus of the role is to help develop modularity and standardization with a configure to order mindset, such that customized systems can quickly be configured with minimum design time from standard assemblies and parts.

The NPD Director leads multiple technology, product development, and some continuous improvement projects consisting of multi-disciplined engineering teams ranging from 5 -10 professional staff. The role has a team of reporting local engineers in Gardiner, NY and manages all local projects, and has a reporting R&D Manager and team at the SP site in Ipswich, UK. Key relationships in this role include; Director of Marketing, Service Leadership, Operations Directors for manufacturing locations & Supply Chain Director.

The role is responsible for developing and overseeing technology roadmaps, engineering projects, processes, budgets, and timelines and make any necessary adjustments to ensure successful completion of projects. There is a particular focus at SP on the development of machines which are reliable, efficient, and cost effective for efficient, repeatable and reliable manufacture.All SP / ATS employees are also expected to own and collaborate on continuous improvement activities using LEAN tools from the ATS Business Model.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

  • Creation, leadership and management of diverse cross functional teams with indirect reports
  • Leads design of products and systems with rigor and due process, first clarifying requirements and developing a formal functional specification before commencing modelling and drawing work. Maintains consideration for cost, schedule, manufacturability, performance, materials, maintenance requirements, appearance and impact on the end user.
  • Oversees all aspects of the design, development, construction and testing processes, looking beyond the assembly or machine to the whole system and desired outcome of the customer.
  • Explores various possible machine configurations and aids in selecting the optimum design for satisfying the customer's processing objectives.
  • Works with the design team to determine work flow, CAD drawing preparation and BOM structure for optimal flow though supply chain and manufacturing.
  • Determines the required design parameters for testing of products and the preparation of test packages.
  • Directs activities to ensure that manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing conform and are documented to functional specifications and customer requirements.
  • Ensures internal and external customers are satisfied, consistent with expectations.
  • Identification of innovative and cost-effective designs for systems, sub-systems and components of technologically complex equipment used in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Knowledgeable of modern design validation tools/techniques and methodologies, such as FEA, DFMEA and DFSS.
  • Keeps abreast of industry standards and regulatory requirements through competitive analysis, trade publications, and participation in outside organizations, such as ISPE and PDA.
  • Handles projects in parallel, managing scheduling demands to optimize output to meet project requirements.
  • Provides mentorship to junior colleagues.
  • Able to think ahead and plan over a one-to-two-year time span.
  • Able to organize and manage multiple priorities and functional disciplines.
  • Planned travel to other SP sites, including UK approximately 10% to 15%, with occasional travel to customer or supplier sites is required.

EXPERIENCE / QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • 5+ years minimum Engineering Management experience in new product development in a process oriented and metric driven Engineering Function. 15+ years minimum Engineering experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering discipling, Mechanical, Electrical or Controls from a four-year college or university.
  • Work experience within an ISO quality environment
  • Experienced in developing equipment to for qualification under NRTL listing (USA & Canada) and CE / UK CA
  • Must have structured problem solving and analytical skills
  • Advantageous, but not essential, to have experience working with of one of more of the following:
    • Refrigeration design experience, particularly with low GWP gases, below -50°C
    • Work experience with vacuum systems down to 5 microns.
    • ISPE GAMP5 standard
    • ASME BPE standard
  • Proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel & Outlook.
  • Proficient with DraftSight, SolidWorks, & SolidWorks PDM.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong focus on accuracy and detail, with good questioning skills.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are typical of those an employee might encounter while performing the essential functions of this job.

  • Work is normally performed in both the office and the shop.
  • The office environment is an interior office with air conditioning.
  • The shop contains mobile equipment, machinery, and high voltages.
  • The shop noise level is variable and may require hearing protection in some areas.
  • The shop is heated when required but many areas are not air conditioned.
  • Some shop processes use high voltage arcs or concentrated magnetic fields.
  • The shop contains open flames and caustic chemicals.
  • Some shop areas may be designate hard hat zones.

Travel to customer and sister company sites is required, including international, estimated at 20% per year.
